Kratom and Driving: Is It Safe?

Kratom and DrivingA lot of kratom users tend to wonder if kratom and driving are a safe combination. But before getting into the matter, let’s understand what kratom is all about. Kratom is basically a plant available in Thailand and other Southeast Asian nations. The concept of the herb refers to certain plants coming from the Mitragyna variants of the Rubiaceae family. Other members under the family include gardenia plants and coffee. A kratom plant’s leaves offer stimulating and opiate-like effects.

Availability

In Southeast Asia, kratom leaves have been utilized for centuries to treat long-term pain, fatigue, stomach problems, opiate withdrawal, and coughs. Just recently, the plant became widely available in the Europe and the U.S. by means of online stores and on-site headshops. Research studies from the medical world indicate that Americans are starting to use kratom for managing opiate withdrawal, and pain.

Uses of Kratom

People have been using kratom to treat a number of health ailments. These include social anxiety, lethargy, fatigue, depression, insomnia, migraines, headaches, and chronic pain. This wonderful herb also has several positive effects. While recreational users prefer the herb for enhanced energy levels, relaxation, or euphoria, some feel mixing kratom and driving is a bad idea.

Kratom Effects

Kratom offers a unique combination of stimulating and opiate-mimicking effects. Such effects depend heavily on the amount of kratom ingested and will vary from a one individual to another.

In low to moderate doses

At 2 to 5 grams, the herb typically produces a subtle, stimulating effect that most users would find pleasurable (although not as intense as those of prescription meds or amphetamines). The effects can lead to enhanced alertness, improved physical energy, higher libido, improved social interaction, and desire to work for extended periods. Kratom effects at low to moderate doses tend to last an average of 3 to 4 hours.

In moderate to high doses

At 5 to 10 grams, the herb mimics an opiate effect: bowel irregularity, constipation, sedation, sleepiness, euphoria, and pain relief. Similar to its lower dosage effects, a higher dose can alternatively lead to dysphoria or euphoria. A kratom’s euphoric effects aren’t as intense as opiates and over-the-counter meds. Larger doses tend to last between 5 to 8 hours. Kratom and driving is never recommended at this stage.

Kratom and Driving

When kratom is ingested and not mixed with illicit drugs or prescription meds, the risk of “snoozing out” or vomiting can be observed at high doses. It’s never recommended to drive while under any drug or opiate — even if you think you’re actually alert when you take your kratom.

Possible unwanted effects such as abrupt tiredness could materialize. Just like with other drugs, kratom should be taken sparingly. It also helps to use common sense since this could help save your life. Avoid mixing kratom and driving, stray from operating any power equipment, and carry out tasks that require complete alertness.

      Hi Chehak,

You are right, Kratom does have booth the stimulating/energizing and euphoric/relaxing effects. With most strains, it comes down to dosing the right amounts. In general, driving is a serious privilege and you can easily hurt or kill someone if you fall asleep at the wheel. Yes, kratom can be energizing but when driving or operating machinery, its always better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for your comment!

Driving while under the use of kratom, is reckless and against the law. If you are going to use these products, you must be responsible, just as you would be with alcohol. If you do use the product, and need to go somewhere, either find a designated driver, call a cab or Uber, walk, or do not go!

You can & will get an OWI/DUI from kratom consumption while driving. Be safe!

Good article, I appreciate the fact your trying to build awareness.

    Thanks,
